LETTER: Board needs to ensure services will continue during transition

Thanks to Dr. Barry Grosskopf for his gracious note in the Bouquet section of Beachcomber last week (Gratitude to Charlene Boyd from VCCC,” Aug. 2). This recognizes the enormous contribution of Providence in the continued existence of Vashon Community Care, and in particular of Charlene Boyd, the Providence representative on the board.

As a former board member and officer, whose mother lived her last years at Vashon Community Care and whose connection with the facility spans over 10 years, I have good reason to be concerned with the continued survival of VCC. That the breach with Providence did not have to happen, is one thing. That it did happen is another, and thus the reported intervention of Transforming Age gives hope to this old sea captain’s heart. However, there is an immediate concern, one about which the board has been silent. This silence causes great disquietude in my heart, and should in the hearts of every resident and their family members.

There are only three weeks left before the end of the contract with Providence to provide management services, which includes the Administrator. There has been no public, nor to my knowledge, private announcements as to how those services are to continue. These include a wide range of services, including the ones with which I am most familiar, those dealing with financial accounting and reporting.

I now call upon the board, and in particular the Chair, Mrs. Hanson, to declare that the arrangements are in place to continue all of the services provided by Providence under the management agreement, and what those arrangements are. Thus the Administrator, who is doing an incredible job under very difficult circumstances, will have all of the tools in her seabag needed to continue to provide the loving and caring environment that is Vashon Community Care.
