LETTER: Don’t let development sprawl south of town

At the Oct. 20 public meeting, King County asked whether the land between town and Center should be rezoned to allow higher density housing. The real question is, should we abandon this green corridor of 100-year old farmhouses in order for developers to build apartments for affordable housing?

Indeed, Vashon needs more affordable housing. Is strip development, sprawl and apartments that don’t fit our rural character the answer? Why not allow accessory dwelling units (ADU’s) throughout the island? Why not more density and affordable housing in town, Burton, or Dockton? Our 1996 Town Plan set aside the area between town and Center as a rural buffer. Please keep town walkable and compact by promoting development in town, instead of letting it sprawl south to Center.
