LETTER: Vashon doesn’t need large numbers of immigrants

The Vashon Resettlement Committee wants to bring Syrian families to the island soon: as many as they can, as fast as they can. I hope this isn’t our culture.

I’m not anti-immigration. I like immigrants I meet, and a few immigrants are OK, but just a few. Only enough to maintain a balance. It will be a sad day if the immigrants aren’t welcome. As long as there aren’t too many, that day won’t come.

When I read the Resettlement Committee’s article in the Feb. 15 Beachcomber, I was appalled at the total lack of regard for the condition we’re in here on Vashon, let alone the Puget Sound region (“Island group still working to settle immigrants on Vashon,” Feb. 15). It all comes down to the numbers, and you know they’re growing. How many children will you have? How many will they have? And who’s counting?

We are in trouble, folks. The politics of the immigration “Do-Good-Nicks” may win out. Vashon Island already bears the pressure of the world’s population. The last thing we need are families with a culture of excess birthrates, regardless of immigration status.
