My husband took a serious fall from a ladder Saturday evening, Oct. 7, and needed to be taken to the hospital in Seattle. I was so relieved and grateful to see those flashing red lights come up my driveway.
It is scary to call 911 — you are acknowledging to yourself that it is a serious situation and that someone you love is in a life-threatening situation. We are so fortunate to have friends, neighbors and professionals at Vashon Island Fire & Rescue willing to be available 24 hours to help us when we need it. The team that came was so calm, efficient and caring, I knew my husband would be taken to hospital quickly and safely.
I also realized how understaffed this dedicated group is. They told me they needed to transfer my husband to another ambulance at the dock on the Seattle side. Our emergency call left only one other fire and rescue person available to answer other aid calls on the island, so they needed to make a quick turnaround.
We have no after-hours medical services on this island. Our fire and rescue people need and deserve our financial support. A vote for Proposition 1 will do more than just restore and support staffing needs of our emergency responders. It also tells these wonderful and dedicated people we are grateful they are here for us.
