LETTER: Vote ‘yes’ on Prop. 1 to help island nonprofits improve accessibility

Soon you will receive your ballots for the August primary election. One of the issues you will be voting on is Proposition 1, known as “Access for All.” This is an initiative that, if passed, will provide meaningful funding assistance to over 300 arts, science, cultural and heritage organizations in King County. They will be able to provide more access to the entire community.

As a member of several nonprofit boards over the years, it is clear that the vast majority of organizations that would benefit from this program are run carefully, responsibly and frugally. They are mission-driven and very much want to be accessible to the entire community, regardless of ability to pay. Most arts organizations rely upon contributions beyond the box office, which generally fund around half of operating expenses. If you have questions on the funding, budget and resources of an organization you are curious or care about, ask them.

I won’t repeat all the many points that are available for your review on the excellent website: accessforallwa.org.

Thank you for your consideration. If you support this proposal, it needs your help to pass. Vote “yes” and advocate for it. Remember to vote.
