LETTER: Why I care about refugees and immigrants

Most of us are immigrants, and many of us were once refugees as well. The Statue of Liberty remains an important reminder that our country was built on the premise of America being a homeland that welcomed all foreigners. She is a symbol that gives renewed hope to those who cross our borders and land on our shores.

I believe we must resist the growing trend to attack immigrants and refugees and give support to our friends and neighbors on this small island.

If people had not reached out to help my parents, my husband, my sister and millions like them, we wouldn’t be alive today. I am deeply appreciative of what America did for me, and I intend to pass it forward, unequivocally, to my neighbors, regardless of how or why they came here.

Welcoming others is part of our island spirit. It is becoming my life’s work. I hope you will join me.
