The Vashon Island Soccer Club sent three teams to the Kitsap Kickoff last weekend: two girls teams, U12 and U14, and one boys team, U13.

The U13 Raptors won their division, with four shutout victories, including a sound defeat of their nemesis of last year, the Green Flying Monkeys.

They had outstanding defensive play, with every player on the field making significant contributions.  The team’s outstanding goal of the tournament was a blast from about 30 yards out by Gerrardo Pereyda in the championship game.

The Vashon Pirates, a U12 girls team coached by Jim Westcott and David Hackett, also played three games at the tournament. The girls lost their three games to select teams from the region but showed a great deal of spirit and promise for the season to come, according to Wescott.

Also playing in the tournament were the Vashon Buccaneers, a U14 girls team, coached by Peter Heffernan. In this warmup for the fall season, the team put together an energetic performance, scoring nine goals to take third place in their bracket. They were led by outstanding work by goalkeepers Mauve Haselton, Grace DeGraaf and Kalie Heffernan.
