More girls than ever are participating in Vashon’s fastpitch softball league, a part of Vashon Youth Baseball and Softball (VYBS).

Jay Hammond, director of fastpitch for VYBS, said interest in the sport has constantly increased in the past few years, and this was the first season the league was able to field a team at every age level.

“I’m very excited,” Hammond said. “I feel like it was a strong success.”

The four Vashon teams, which play against other teams in the West Seattle League, have also seen increasing success on the field in recent years.

This season, the 10 and under team, coached by Desiree Nelson, beat five other teams to take first in its division, and the 15 and under team, coached by Lauri Hennessey finishedsecond out of six teams.
