The VHS girls soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 7-0 victory over Chimacum on Thursday at home.

Six of the seven goals at the game were scored by the graduating players, including Lena de Guzman with three, and one each by Anna Osborne, Olivia Gass and Samantha Clements. Fellow senior Marielee Storms was only held out of the scoring column by bad luck and exceptional efforts by the Chimacum keeper, as several of her efforts nearly found the back of the net.

Freshman Camille de Guzman wrapped up the scoring, and fellow keeper Kate Atwell kept the visitors from putting up a tally of their own.

The win followed a hard-fought 2-1 loss in overtime at Eatonville on Tuesday. Freshman Madelyn McEachern scored in the first half for the Pirates, but the second-place Cruisers managed a late goal in regulation to tie it at 1.

The comeback was capped with a heartbreaking tally against the tired and injury-depleted Pirates in the overtime period.

The final record of 10 wins against six losses is a testament to the heart of the team, which had to deal with injuries to key players throughout the season. First-year head coach Sergei Serebryakov was never able to field the same team twice as captain Lena de Guzman and starters Madison Chapman, Emily Browne, Harper Howard and Paige Browne all missed parts of the season, as did several other key contributors.

Despite the obstacles, the Pirates finished in fourth place in the Nisqually League and played The Northwest School (second place in the Emerald City League) on Tuesday after press deadline in a loser-out playoff game.

The winner will travel to King’s High School on Thursday to complete in the Tri-District Tournament, which determines seeding for the state championships.
