Sail through the dog days of summer
This summer, the 18th season of sailing programs, co-sponsored by Quartermaster Yacht Club and the Vashon Park District, still has a few places open for young sailors.
Sailing is one of the popular summer programs offered by the park district in cooperation with Quartermaster Yacht Club. Junior sailors (11 and up) spend four days on the water with Sail USA Certified Instructors on JY-15 racing dinghies. Junior programs are limited to 20 sailors and run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the yacht club.
Beginner sailors (ages 8 to 10) have one instructor for every three sailors as they learn the basics in eight-foot El Toro dinghies. Beginners learn the basics of handling a boat, basic water safety and basic marine ecology. Beginner camps are limited to 12 sailors and run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This summer six experienced instructors are returning: Will Kammin, Malkolm Graffe, Peggy Kammin, Elliott Hulser, Madeline Morser and Tyler Sayvetz.
Four new apprentice instructors will join the team: Tucker Lazare, Madeleine Wolczko, Thane Gill and Tim Hanson.
Weekly classes started June 30 and run through Aug. 7. Each week hosts one junior camp for 10- to 16-year-olds and one beginner camp for 7 to 9-year-olds.
Fees for this year are the same as the past five years — $180 per student per week.
