The Vashon Island Rowing Club (VIRC) masters felt the heat on multiple fronts during the Aug. 2 Summer Extravaganza Regatta on Seattle’s Green Lake.

Racing against much younger boats on a stellar summer day, a quad with Scott Engelhard, Steve Haworth, Michael Merta and Mark Ripley finished second on the water, but ended up way out in front with an age-adjusted, first-place finish. Michael Merta and Mark Ripley went on to take second in a doubles race, while Kim Goforth, Su DeWalt, Nancy Murphy and Celia Congdon took third in the women’s quad.

VIRC men’s team Co-Captain Bob Stewart handled race scheduling and logistics, while Juniors Coach Lucas Ridinger drove the boat trailer and assisted with rigging and other readiness tasks.
