U14 Eagles victorious in Labor Day tournament

The Vashon Eagles, above, the Island’s under-14 girl’s soccer team, placed first in the Kitsap Kickoff Tournament Labor Day weekend in Port Orchard.

The tournament featured eight teams split into two divisions. The Eagles emerged at the top of the Red Division with a 2-1 record, earning a spot in the finals with a victory over the South Kitsap Jaguars, who play U15 ball.

Islanders swim open waters of La Jolla

Vashon swimmers Nick Wiesnet, Lynne Cadigan and Scott Bonney took part in the prestigous La Jolla Roughwater Swim in San Diego, Sunday, Sept. 7.

Cadigan’s time of 23:44 for the one-mile Ocean Swim placed her 27th overall among more than 1,200 women swimmers.

Wiesnet went 23:15 in the 19 to 24 age group, and Bonney was 30:45 in the men’s over 50 group.

The annual race has been in existence since 1916.

Cross-country race at Paradise Ridge

The 2008 Vashon Island Cross-Country Invitational will be on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Paradise Ridge Park on Vashon.

The event features an open field race as well as age-group races for middle-schoolers and boys and girls varsity and junior varsity runners.

Spectators are invited. Vashon coach Kevin Ross said that the Paradise Ridge course is a great spectator venue with many opportunities to see the runners.

Parents, alumni, coaches and spectators are encouraged to participate in the open race.

The event draws runners from a variety of 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A programs.

The field size is about 12 schools.
