Girls take down the Eagles

Beating the Life Christian Eagles 54-36 on Friday, the girls basketball team increased its league standings to 4-1 and were tied for 10th of 1A girls teams statewide on Monday.

“Every player went into this game with a good focus, and it showed on the floor tonight,” said coach Henry Porter.

Life Christian has a new coach this year, who has led programs at bigger schools. He threw a lot of defenses at the Pirates, Porter reported.

“We were happy to practice many of our different offenses against this team, and the girls responded, running the plays just as we had worked on them in practice,” he said. “We had 12 assists as a team, and the girls did a great job of setting each other up.”

The girls finished the first half with a nicely executed second quarter, going inside and outside and “letting the Eagles know who was in control of the game,” Porter said.

In the third quarter, the Eagles came out in a zone defense, and the Pirates responded with five 3s from the corners.

“We only had six turnovers as a team,” Porter said. “That had a lot to do with us staying in a nice rhythm all evening.”

The Pirates have two away games this week — today, Jan. 21, at Charles Wright, and Friday, Jan. 23, at Chimacum.
