With quarterback Nick Amundsen recovering from the flu and nearly half the Youth Pirates seventh- and eighth-grade team out with illness or injury, the Pirates had barely enough healthy kids to make a team when they played the Gig Harbor Tides on Saturday. Owen Brenno stepped in as a running back, and Ezra Ende tried a few plays as quarterback before an injury took him out of the game. The team played more than half the game with every available athlete on the field, reported coach Matt Amundsen. The Pirates lost 23-0.
