The Pirate track team sent three athletes to compete in the state championship track and field meet, held at Woodward Field at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Each put in a strong showing, with two earning medals.

In his first ever state appearance in track, junior Tyler Stoffer came home with a seventh-place medal from the 110-meter high hurdles.

In the preliminary heat, Stoffer secured the eighth spot with a time of 16.4 seconds to move into the finals. On day two, Stoffer ran a 17.13 to medal in seventh place.

He also competed in the high jump, tying for seventh place with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches. After a tiebreaker, Stoffer ended in ninth place finish overall.

Junior James Spencer just missed the finals by one place in the 400-meter dash. He clocked a 51.98 in the prelims.

The lone senior representing Vashon High School at the state meet was Kate Straube. She ran the 100-meter hurdles in 17.6 seconds in the prelims, also missing the finals.

“These are quality individuals who made some great contributions during the 2010 season,” said track and field coach Kevin Ross.
