Morning access to track and field delayed

The Vashon Island School District recently released its plan for public access hours to the new track and field, but last week modified those hours until a new automatic locking device can be installed.

Until mid-January, the facility will not be available in the morning hours, which will be from 5 to 7:30 a.m. The track and field will be open from 3 to 9 p.m. during the week and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends, as the district previously indicated.

School Superintendent Slade McSheehy apologized for the delay, saying that the field had been set up for key card entry, but the district changed course after hearing more public comment. That change meant an “actuator” needs to be installed, and the contractor could not do so until the middle of January. Once that work is complete, the school district will let the community know that morning access is possible.

The track and field will be closed for public use on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
