Soccer team wins three in a row

The Vashon High School boys’ soccer team played three games last week, and the Pirates are still looking in great form.

They started off Monday against Steilacoom High. The Pirates began with a goal three minutes into the game from junior Tommy Delargy. He was assisted by freshman Jakob Heuschert.Junior Finley Oswald took the second of the game by smashing the ball into the upper right corner of the net after being set up perfectly by Delargy. Vashon started making substitutions from the bench, which brought junior Will Hennessey onto the field, and he scored on his first possession of the ball after Delargy dropped it for him to set up a perfect shot. Vashon kept dominating the game throughout the second half, and Delargy took his second of the night 12 minutes into the halftime start. Vashon kept control for the remainder of the match. In the dying minutes of the match, junior Isaac Ajeto was subbed onto the pitch for Delargy. Ajeto scored two goals in the last five minutes, both assisted by Hueschert, and the game ended at 6-0.

On Wednesday, the Pirates played Klahowya High at VHS stadium. Klahowya is one of the hardest teams Vashon could face in the post- season playoffs. Klahowya scored first after a miscommunication between defense and midfield. Then, in the dying minutes of the first half, Oswald scored a header off a perfectly crossed corner kick by Heuschert. In the second half there were no goals scored, but both the Klahowya Eagles and the Vashon Pirates were showing the best they had. They had it out for each other and were trying to seal the victory for their respective sides. A key player for Vashon was sophomore goalkeeper Richard Rivas-Gutierrez. He saved the game for Vashon by making four incredible saves in the second half that everyone in the VHS stands thought would have ended the night for Vashon.

On Saturday, the Pirates traveled to Blaine. They came home with a 6-0 win with hardly much effort. Vashon played with a lot of missing defensive players and was still able to manage a blowout. Heuschert scored the first goal of the game. A couple minutes later, Ajeto sent a long ball for Delargy, who finished it with class. Delargy then scored his second with two minutes left in the half ending it 3-0. Opening the second half, Oswald scored in the opening minutes. The Blaine players were beginning to get frustrated and completely forgot about the rules of the game and started taking out Vashon players. Foul after foul were committed by the Borderites. Delargy scored once again with an assist from senior Alden Hinden-Stevenson. Delargy was subbed off, and senior Sam Briggs came onto the field. Briggs put on a great show by pressuring the opponent’s defensive line. Minutes after coming onto the pitch, he was brought down in the goalkeeper’s box and was awarded a penalty. With confidence, Briggs buried the penalty kick into the top right corner of the net, ending the match.

Vashon has only received one goal so far this season due to the impressive work done by the defensive line and goalkeeper Rivas-Gutierrez. Currently leading in goals is Delargy with seven, followed by Oswald with four. Leading in assists is Hueschert with six. As a freshman playing against upper classmen opponents, he is having an incredible start to his season.

The junior varsity squad also had games last week, losing to Steilacoom 3-0 and Klahowya 2-1. Scoring for Vashon against Klahowya was freshman Chance Mentink after a rebound shot that hit the post by freshman Zach Van Dusen.

On Tuesday this week, after press time, both boys’ squads traveled to play rivals Charles Wright Academy. On Thursday, the Pirates will host returning league champs Seattle Christian at VHS Stadium starting at 6 p.m. and then host again on Saturday against Seattle Academy at 11 a.m.
