Vashon girls’ soccer fights for top spot in league standings

On Oct. 9, the Vashon girls soccer team traveled to Annie Wright and had an amazing game. Although the field was short and the ground was hot, they finished the game 6-0. In the first five minutes, sophomore midfielder Corrine Ryan put the ball in the back of the net with the help of Anna Riggs. Then, another goal was netted by Ryan, this time with a group effort from Payton Venturi and Sydnee Adams. Senior midfielder Riggs buried a perfect goal from just outside the box. Junior striker Adams scored one too with the help of Olivia London. It was Adams’ most impressive goal of the season so far. With a couple of minutes left in the half, Emily Serebryakov scored a goal by taking it up the field, moving around everyone with her amazing skills. Near the end of the half, Ryan tried to make her third goal of the game, but it ricocheted off of the goalie, and luckily Klara Plenk was there to clean things up and put the ball in the net. That capped off a dominating first half for Vashon, 6-0. No goals were scored in the second half as the Pirates played a game of keep away and possession from Annie Wright.

The Vashon girls varsity soccer team experienced a 0-2 loss last Thursday at home during a non-league game against Seattle Academy. Seattle scored their first goal four minutes in, and continued to dominate with a strong passing game. Vashon had a handful of attempts on goal, including a header by Anna Riggs that bounced off of the crossbar, but Seattle’s goalie persevered throughout the game. With outstanding play, culminating in multiple saves, Vashon’s sophomore goalie Tamsen Henry played a stand-out match, even getting compliments after the game by the referees. Henry displayed strong athleticism and impressive play throughout the game — from a full-on body slam inflicted upon her by one of Seattle’s forwards, several saves against Seattle’s offensive line dribbling around and dodging the defense, and two impressive side dive saves. Seattle finally got one more past Henry in the last minute of play. Vashon maintained commendable sportsmanship while a few Seattle teammates displayed verbal and physical outbursts toward the referee and Vashon players. Up next is an away game at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 18 against first place Bellevue Christian at Marymoor Park in Redmond.

After splitting wins and losses last week, the Vashon girls soccer team traveled Saturday to Cascade Christian. This was a big league road rivalry game as Vashon currently sits in second place with Cascade Christian in third. Vashon went up early 1-0 thanks to another goal by junior striker Sydnee Adams. Cascade Christian tied the game 1-1 midway through the first half. Cascade Christian was first on the scoreboard in the second half with a lucky shot from 35 yards out that got caught in the bright sunshine and dropped into the upper corner of the net. From there, Vashon was in comeback mode. And thanks to Adams and her 16th goal of the year, the Pirates tied things up with less than 15 minutes to go. That’s how the game would end, but not without some extra excitement as the game went into double overtime. The 2-2 tie keeps Vashon one game ahead (at the time of publication) of Cascade Christian in league standings at 3-1-1. Don’t forget about senior night at VHS Stadium coming up Oct. 24 vs. Annie Wright.
