VHS baseball team collects win, two losses

The Vashon High School Pirates boys’ baseball team played three games last week and ended with one win and two losses.

The first game was March 20 against veteran league foe Cascade Christian. The Pirates lost the game 0-8. The Pirates’ hot bats cooled off in this one as the only hit in the game was a lead off single by Andreas Stark in the first inning. This was the first game where the opposing pitching was bringing some heat and the Pirates were a little tentative at the plate.

The bright spot for the Pirates was the pitching of Ashton Dulfer, Levi Myer and Armondo Oatman who combined to limit Cascade to seven hits. Cascade Christian scored all of their runs in the fifth inning. If not for a couple of errors, the Pirates would have escaped without giving up a run. The youth of the Pirates showed up in this game but it was a great learning experience for the team.

On March 29, league foe Seattle Christian traveled to Vashon for the first home game of the year. The Pirates won this one with some late inning hitting. The pitching again was a bright spot for the Pirates as Wyatt Yates started the game and threw four innings of three-hit, shutout baseball. He was followed by Oatman who allowed one hit in an inning pitched and Stark who threw two innings of no-hit baseball. The trio allowed only four hits for the game.

The hitting for the Pirates came back against a good Seattle Christian left-handed pitcher. Seattle Christian had tied the score in the top of the sixth inning at 3-3, but in the bottom of the inning, Dulfer drilled a ball over the fence for a home run and a 4-3 lead. Three batters later, Yates hit a mammoth home run that landed in the football field, giving the Pirates a 5-3 lead. Stark then shut Seattle Christian out in the seventh for the win. Leading the way at the plate for the Pirates was Dulfer with two hits and Myer, Yates, Aidan McCann and Will Gard each with one.

Dulfer, Myer, Bryce Beaty and Yates each collected an RBI for the Pirates.

On Saturday, the Pirates traveled to Coupeville for a non-league game. The Pirates lost the game by a score of 8-2.
