VHS girls’ soccer dominates in two of its first three games

On Sept. 18, the Vashon High School girls’ varsity soccer team set out to play their first game on the new field at the high school stadium. The girls played Charles Wright Academy, their first league game of the season.

The game started fast with two goals from Pirate Emily Serebryakov. Center defender Anna Riggs brought the ball up the field with a beautiful goal while right midfielder Payton Venturi sailed the ball into the back of the net from way outside of the keeper’s box. That one was assisted by fellow sophomore Corinne Ryan and put the girls up 3-0 at half time.

The second half also saw quick scores for Vashon. With an assist by Venturi, Serebryakov scored her first hat trick of the season. Striker Sydnee Adams buried one too, thanks to a fantastic delivery by Riggs. Then, shooting the ball just past the keeper’s fingertips, Serebryakov scored again. That made it four goals in the game for her, while Riggs grabbed her second goal late in the contest, leaving the girls with an outstanding win and a final score of 8-0 versus their league rival Charles Wright.

Following a tough defeat against Kings in Shoreline on Sept. 20, a deflated squad had no choice but to get back at it two days later at home vs. Cedar Park Christian. Playing at home on the new field was just what the team needed. Playing through a mixture of rain, wind, and sunshine, Vashon was fairly speedy in getting on to the scoreboard. Riggs opened up the scoring for Vashon, while freshman midfielder Franki Brown followed that up with a goal of her own, and she can thank Venturi for the beautiful set up. Riggs wasn’t done scoring, though, as she buried goals number two and number three (with the help of freshman Lucy Wing) just before the halftime whistle blew. Cedar Park tried their best to keep it close by netting one, cutting the lead to 4-1 at the half.

The second half played out much like the first. Cedar Park scored quickly, shaving the lead to 4-2, and giving them what turned out to be a false sense of momentum. But it wasn’t long before Vashon turned up the pressure by scoring goals number five, six and seven. Serebryakov added to her impressive season total by putting home two of the final three. Those were assisted by junior Adams and senior Emily Levin, while Adams netted one more as well, following a nice set up by Riggs.

The girls play next at home at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1; JV plays at 4 p.m.
