VHS girls’ soccer shuts out Cascade Christian

On Tuesday, Sept. 25, the VHS girls soccer team battled arch rival Cascade Christian at home in its second league game of the season, its eighth game overall.

The weather cooperated, and the time of possession throughout both halves was fairly equal — but that was to be the only equality in this game. Junior Sydnee Adams opened up the scoring for the Pirates midway through the first half with a trademark sniper shot from just outside the penalty box, while senior Anna Riggs increased Vashon’s lead with a distance strike of her own.

The Pirates were up a comfortable 2-0 at halftime. The second half played out like a carbon copy of the first, with two more Vashon goals lighting up the scoreboard. Goal number three was buried past the Cascade Christian keeper off the left foot of Adams, assisted perfectly by Emily Serebryakov. The VHS girls wrapped up the scoring on this night as center midfielder Riggs dribbled the ball up and dished it off yet again to Adams. Just like before, her powerful right foot — this time from 25 yards out — was no match for the opposing goalkeeper. It was another hat trick on the season for Adams.

Thanks to a back line consisting of senior Emily Levin, juniors Hannah Spranger and Mari Kanagy, and freshmen Phoebe Wilke and Lucy Wing, along with sophomore keeper Tamsen “shutout” Henry, Cascade Christian just could not get anything going offensively. This was Vashon’s first win against Cascade Christian in many years of trying, and was particularly satisfying after a tough loss to them in a shootout during last year’s district playoffs.
