Vashon Solar LLC has garnered $100,000 from investors to build a community solar project at The Harbor School, the first of its kind on Vashon.

Gib Dammann, an Island architect who spearheaded the project, said about a dozen investors purchased 20 shares, or units, each valued at $5,000. The capital, he said, will enable the group to install a 9 kilowatt solar array — enough to power one house, and then some — on property its leasing from The Harbor School.

“It’s a milestone,” he said.

Investors will receive tax credits as well as refund checks from Puget Sound Energy for the solar energy that they add to the grid.

Dammann expects the array to begin generating power in a month or so. The group is now looking for another pool of investors for its second phase, a build-out of the array, enabling it to generate as much as 30 kilowatts of energy. Dammann said he hopes to complete phase two by July 1.
