Islanders write in about Vashon’s theatre scene.

Getting involved

Vashon theater scene needs you!

Vashon is home to four professionally-led, community-centered theater companies, with artists, musicians, writers, and producers stepping on stage with a new vision for Vashon’s cultural landscape.

Drama Dock, led by me, continues a vibrant, more than 45-year history of intergenerational plays and musicals, while Vashon Repertory Theatre, led by Charlotte Tiencken, burst onto the scene with a successful two-week summer festival in 2021 which it aims to repeat again in 2022.

UMO (Unidentified Moving Objects), led by Elizabeth Klob, offers innovative physical theatre programming, while Take A Stand Theatre, led by Chris Boscia, produces readings and new work that speak up and speak out for the marginalized in the theater. All four theatre companies have up-to-date websites and offer a variety of programming.

Live theater requires a few key ingredients, including funding, people and space. Thankfully, Vashon has space for its theater groups to thrive and collaborate, but right now the most immediate need is skilled labor for the 2022 summer season.

Vashon Repertory Theatre seeks an experienced technical director for VRT’s Summer Festival (rehearsals in June and July, performances July 14 to 31), a costume designer for “Much Ado About Nothing,” and a carpenter for set building.

Drama Dock seeks a wardrobe manager, prop designer, and prop manager for the new musical “Winghaven Park” (rehearsals start on July 19, performances Aug. 26 to Sept. 3, at Open Space).

Both VRT and Drama Dock seek the use of local housing/guest rooms, or at least two camper vans or camping trailers with toilets and showers for two to four theatre staff/actors (July – August).

Staff positions are offered with a paid stipend. Contact Charlotte Tiencken at vashonrepertorytheatre.org or Lisa Peretti at dramadock.org for information or referrals.
