Vote for Prop 1

We are medical professionals and residents of Vashon and Maury Islands. We are writing to encourage you to supportProposition 1, the proposal to establish a public hospital district for Vashon and Maury Islands when you vote this November.

In the Sept. 5 issue of The Beachcomber, Dr. Mary Bergman and Dr. Lydia Aguilar each wrote eloquent statements that outlinethe obstacles to providing sustainable options for primary medical care in our community. Dr. Aguilar rightly reminds us thatthe hospital district model has served as a long-term option for rural and island communities across Washington State. Dr.Bergman helpfully breaks down the financial burden that households on Vashon and Maury Islands would bear under thehospital district levy.

Our community cannot afford to lose its access to basic health care.

We appreciate the thorough investigation, careful consideration and patient discussion that the members of the Vashon-MauryHealth Collaborative have conducted during the past five years. We agree with the collaborative’s conclusion that establishinga hospital district is our community’s best available option for securing access to basic primary care medical services.
