Vashon Events has announced the release of their second volume of Vashon Calling, a compilation album of songs by local musicians.
The collection of songs is the second volume of this annual project. The project supports Vashon Events, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local music and building community. Also, said its producers, the album supports local musicians by helping them get their music out into the world.
“We like to think of the compilation album as cross-pollinating, meaning that someone will buy it because they know one of the artists on the album, but then they fall in love with the other musicians on the album as well, many of whom they might not have heard before,” said Allison Shirk, co-director of Vashon Events.
She also said her hope is that listeners will hear a new song and buy the complete album of that artist.
Volume II — which has kid-friendly music that can be enjoyed by the whole family — features songs in a wide variety of styles and genres. Artists include Julia Hanowell, Steve Itterly, Camille Reeves, The FieldHands, Subconscious Population, Bob Krinsky, Gregg Curry, Ara Lee James, Caspar Babypants, Joe Panzetta, Jennifer Stills, Chuck Roehm, and Kevin Joyce.
The musicians on the album range the spectrum of ages and all the songs have a connection to life on Vashon in some form or another. Hanowell, for example, is a recent graduate of Vashon High School, while Subconscious Population and Bob Krinsky have been performing on Vashon for decades. Some of the songs on the album are not available anywhere else.
Along with Vashon Events, other album producers include David & Sherrie Littlefield, Heidi L. Grimsley, Chris Ballew, Heather Russell & U.S. Bank, Trigg Insurance Agency, and Chuck Roehm. The cover art by the island photographer Terry Donnelly.
The new volume is $15, or buyers can get both volumes as a bundle for $25. Purchase online, at vashonevents.org.
