Island storyteller, poet and teaching artist Merna Ann Hecht has teamed up again with other island artists to publish a ninth book of refugee and immigrant youth poetry and art.

In celebration of the book, “The Voice of My Heart: Unforgettable Memories in an Unforgettable Year,” and the previous book, “We Are the Future: Poems with a Voice for Peace,” compelling broadsides of refugee and immigrant art and poetry will be on display for First Friday and all of July at Anu Rana’s, on Vashon.

Island graphic designer Richard Rogers designed both of these books and each broadside; island photographer David Lynch has taken portraits of each young person involved in the multi-year publishing project, and island graphic designer Jenna Riggs also contributed by creating graphics for a number of poems in each book.

The books are published by Seattle’s Chin Music Press and can be purchased at the Vashon Bookshop.
