Arts Around Town

Concert within a play

Drama Dock will present Moisés Kaufman’s Broadway play “33 Variations,” directed by Charlotte Tiencken, at the Kay White Hall Thursday through Sunday.

Inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven’s obsession with a prosaic song that became his famous “33 Variations,” the play, which includes interludes from the composition played on stage, weaves together two stories set in two eras to look at the power of obsession, the creative process, greed, relationships, love and the transformative beauty that lives on in works of art.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are sold at VCA and at vashoncenterforthearts.org. Due to adult themes, the show is recommended for ages 12 and up.

World music concert

Jazz and world-music fretless bass player Jason Everett is bringing world-class musician V. Selvaganesh and violinist Radhika Iyer, plus other acclaimed musicians to the island for a special concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Vashon High School theater.

The week before the concert, the group will meet in Seattle at Jack Straw Studio to rehearse Everett’s 11 original compositions before two recording sessions followed by Friday’s performance.

“In one week, we are doing an incredible amount of work, but these guys are of such a high caliber,” Everett said. When Selva walks on stage, it is so good, no matter what he does.”
