Original Works, Ike Harmon album release, art talk, open house at VCA, and youth choir and band concerts coming up

Original Works 2023

“Original Works 2023,” an annual program of original dance, will take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18, with a matinee at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 18, at Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA).

The production will present new works by current VCA students, alumni, and faculty, in addition to Vashon Dance Academy faculty and Seattle dance professionals. Get tickets at vashoncenterforthearts.org.

Ike Harmon and all-star band

Island musician Ike Harmon will release a new album, “Cosmic Refugee,” at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, at The Vashon Roasterie. The album, produced by Harmon and Jason Shavey, was recorded at Synergy Studios, in Seattle, and mastered by three-time Grammy winner, audio mastering engineer Brad Blackwood.

Harmon’s band features Heart drummer Ben Smith, Northwest folk and roots icon Orville Johnson, and well-known islanders Mike Nichols and Ryan St. James. The concert is presented by Lost Nation Music and 604 B.C. Productions.

Coco Bender at Open Space

Open Space for Arts & Community will present a classical piano performance with Coco Bender, a rising star in the Pacific Northwest classical music scene, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 18.

Her performance will feature the music of 18th-21st century composers Ludwig Van Beethoven, R. Nathaniel Dett, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and H. Leslie Adams. Purchase tickets and find out more at vashoncenter­­forthearts.org.

Art Talk

Art historian Rebecca Albiani will present a talk on portrait artist Alice Neel at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Vashon Center for the Arts. Purchase tickets and find out more at vashoncenterforthearts.org.

Neel (1900-1984), made bold and memorable renditions of the vivid characters she encountered in her search to capture what she called “the dignity and eternal importance of the human being.”

Stitching legend to share her secrets

When the Vashon Quilt Guild meets at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, local artist Nancy Sipple will be the guest speaker.

Sipple has spent her entire life sewing, quilting, embroidering and engaging in home décor projects.

While living in the Los Angeles area, she was a silversmith and apprentice for Allan Adler in Beverly Hills, and also operated her own small business in Studio City. She often contributes needlework art pieces to Vashon auctions and has been featured in shows at Vashon Center for the Arts and The Hardware Store Gallery.

Guests are welcome to attend the Quilt Guild meeting, which will take place in the community room at Vashon Lutheran Church.

Youth Concerts

The music department of Vashon Island School District (VISD) has several concerts coming up to celebrate the accomplishments of youth in choir and band programs in Vashon High School (VHS) and McMurray Middle School (McM).

A free Vashon High School (VHS) spring band concert will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, at the VHS Theater. The McM spring band concert will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 23, in the McM lunch room, and is also free.

More choir and chorale performances will take place in April, and a VHS and McM pop concert will take place on May 31.
