Arts in Brief: What’s Happening Oct. 18 – 25

The arts in brief

MOODY, BLUES AND CLASSIC ROCK

OneNiteStand, a local band, will play a free show at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi. The show is notable because it will mark the debut of a new singer for the band, Arlette Moody, known to islanders as a multifaceted performer and entertainer. The band plays rock and blues, with an emphasis on well-seasoned rock covers along with a sprinkling of originals. The show is for all ages until 11 p.m. and ages 21 and older after that.

A PAIR OF KINGS

Tip the Scales, a local organization championing fair pay for musicians, will present an evening with Vashon’s Mark Graham and Seattle-based Orville Johnson, “The Kings of Mongrel Folk,” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. The house concert will take place at a residential location that will be revealed when you reserve your seat by emailing kat@kateggleston.com. The well-known duo blurs musical boundaries by combining several genres. Graham is a clarinet and harmonica virtuoso and a master lyricist. Johnson is a singer and plays plucked instruments including dobro, guitar and mandolin. For more information and to sign up for the concert, visit Tip the Scales on Facebook. There is a $20 suggested donation for the intimate night of music.

NAME THOSE ARTISTS

Vashon Center for the Arts is looking for volunteers to help with a project identifying people in a trove of old photographs of island artists. Volunteer by emailing Joseph Panzetta at josephp@vashoncenterforthearts.org.

AUDITION FOR ‘THE NORMAL HEART’

Drama Dock will hold auditions for a staged reading of “The Normal Heart,” with parts for nine men and one woman, on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., at McMurray Middle School. The production, directed by Charlotte Tiencken, will be presented as part of the observance of Vashon World AIDS Day on Sunday, Dec. 2, at Open Space for Arts & Community. If you can’t make the Oct. 20 audition, contact cmtiencken@gmail.com to set up another time.

CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES OPENS

The opener of Vashon-Maury Island Chamber Orchestra’s season will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 and 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 (family matinee) at Vashon Center for the Arts. Pianists Linda Lee and Evan Stults will join the orchestra in Saint-Saëns’ whimsical “Carnival of the Animals” in a program of “Amuse-Bouche” — bite-sized French delights — and will also include Couperin’s “Pieces en Concert,” featuring Rowena Hammill on cello. For tickets to the series ($15 to $30) visit, www.vashoncenterforthearts.org.

Uma Dinsmore-Tuli, an international yoga teacher, author and founder of the Total Yoga Nidra Network, will offer an evening of inspirational songs, mystic poetry, and the sounds of kirtan and mantra from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Hanna Barn, a private movement studio on Maury Island. Songs and poetry from the Bhakti Yoga, Shakta Tantra and Sufi traditions will be presented by Dinsmore-Tuli, her Vashon student Carol Lutra-Johns and the musicians of Zaftig.
