Celebrate International Women’s Day at arts center

“Women: A Creative Force” will be a full day of art, community, and theater.

“Women: A Creative Force,” a full day of art, community, and theater held in celebration of International Women’s Day, will take place Saturday, March 8, at Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA).

The multi-event celebration will be presented by Women Hold the Key, Vashon Repertory Theatre (VRT) and VCA.

The day will start with free coffee, pastries and conversation from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., followed by a day of free art-making opportunities at “creativity tables” staffed by weaver Suzanne Hubbard, theater maker Patricia Toovey, and jeweler Stephanie Benson, who will lead women in making collages expressing gratitude.

A new major exhibit, “Women Make Glass,” featuring a collection of 15 Pacific Northwest glass artists, will be on view in VCA’s gallery, with two other exhibits — Tininha Silva’s “Into the Unknown,” featuring large woven sculptures, and Benson’s silver and gold jewelry — also on view in VCA’s atrium and gift shop, respectively.

At 2 p.m. VRT will present a reading of Y York’s play, “Becoming Awesome,” in its Incubator Series running March 6-9 in VCA’s Kay White Hall.

A happy hour cash bar from 4:30-6 p.m. will feature mocktails and cocktails by Nashi Orchards, beer, wine, and mixed drinks.

At 7:30 p.m., VRT’s Incubator Series will present a reading of the new musical “Mercy,” by Elizabeth Heffron and Hope Wechkin.
