Classes for every budding artist fill VAA’s fall class roster

A new series of classes at Vashon Allied Arts will explore the arts of painting, sculpture, pottery, glass, and songwriting.

Upcoming classes include a one-day workshop for kids 9 and up that will explore the process of transforming trash into treasures and recycled materials into sculptures and mosiacs.

The workshop, taught by sooze bloom deLeon grossman, will meet 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19.

Teens to adults will learn the craft of songwriting, from lyric writing basics to melody-making. Instructor Sue Ennis is a platinum-selling songwriter for the rock band Heart.

The workshop, which is recommeded for both beginning and more experienced songwriters, will meet noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19.

Burton artist Donna Botten will teach a new class for aspiring teen to adult watercolorists. This five-week class will offer tips and techniques to create your own watercolor painting.

The course starts 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, Oct. 20.

Potter Liz Lewis will teach pottery students how to create a beautiful painted bird plate from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sundays, October 25 and Nov. 1.

Painter Pam Engels will lead a three-day oil painting intensive that will include a painting demonstration, discussion and time for students to create new work.

Sessions will take place 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, 9:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, and 12:30 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26.

Adults who are curious about the ancient art of encaustic painting can give it a try, using raw wax, under the tutelage of instructor Jon Rader Jarvis.

The class will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2. For more information, click “classes” at www.jonraderjarvis.com.

Students aged 11 to 18 can explore the art of glassmaking, including blown glass, fused glass, cast glass and mosaic with instructors Brian and Tara Brenno. Classes will take place from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 26, Nov. 11 and Nov. 9.
