Film Institute brings arthouse fare to Vashon Theatre

Three monthly series spotlighting indie, horror, classic and cult films are coming to Vashon Theatre.

Arthouse cinema lovers, rejoice: three new monthly series spotlighting indie, horror, classic and cult films are coming to Vashon Theatre, courtesy of the cineastes behind the Vashon Island Film Festival and Vashon Film Institute (VFI).

VFI recently announced the hire of Stacey Oristano as its lead programmer for the series. Oristano is an actress perhaps best known for her roles as Mindy Riggins in NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” and Truly Stone in “Bunheads,” produced by ABC Family.

So what films does Oristano have up her sleeve for islanders?

Screenings booked for October include Bertrand Bonello’s French time-traveling science fiction romance “The Beast” (Léa Seydoux) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1 — part of VFI’s “Indie Spotlight” series, showcasing independent films, to play on the first Tuesday of each month.

A “Freaky Friday” series, happening on the second Friday of every month, will bow with Osgood Perkins’ hit serial killer horror, “Longlegs,” at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11. Critics have called the film “the scariest film of the decade” and “the best serial killer horror film since The Silence of the Lambs.”

The third series, “Seminal Sundays,” set to take place on the third Sunday of each month, will present classic, cult and overlooked films. First up in that series is Park Chan-wook’s timeless Korean action thriller “Oldboy,” at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20.

Oristano said she is excited to bring this type of international and arthouse programming to local audiences.

“These stories bring us together and provide a glimpse into universes both familiar and foreign,” said Oristano. “That is a powerful magic.”
