Gamble on a free screening of a new Hollywood film

A pair of Hollywood writers and producers will be at the Vashon Theatre on Wednesday to introduce and share a free screening of their new movie, “ Double Down,” a film that is currently in post-production.

Two Hollywood heavy hitters will be at the Vashon Theatre to introduce and share a free screening of their new movie, Double Down,” a film that is currently in post-production.

The film’s writer/director and producer, Tom Schulman (Indecent Proposal, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Oscar Winner for Dead Poets Society) and director/producer, Rick Wallace, (Halloween 1978, LA Law, Major Crimes, Hill Street Blues, The Closer, etc.) will host the screening at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 4.

So why a preview screening on Vashon?

According to Schulman, the trek to Vashon is a homecoming, of sorts, as his family vacationed on the island for many years, when his children were growing up.

“We love the island and have fond memories of seeing movies in the Vashon Theater,” he said. “Hollywood has a tradition — observed less and less these days but nevertheless a tradition I’m fond of — of taking movies ‘out of town’ to preview. I can’t think of a better place than Vashon where I’d like to show the movie.”

“Double Down” takes place in the dangerous and shady world of illegal, high-stakes keno pool gambling. Keno pool — not to be confused with the game played in Vegas — is the most difficult game of pool, bar none, and the gambling associated with it is so diabolically designed that the game was once outlawed in many states.

The film is set in a run-down plantation house in the rural south at the turn of the 21st century. Nick, the house owner, is enamored of a smart, tough and charming keno ace named Diana, and he is determined to stake her and win big. But Diana must first earn a match against Beaumont DuBinion, the undisputed world’s greatest keno player — who, it turns out, has a contentious and violent history with Nick.
