Islander Trish Millines Dziko to present MLK Day workshop

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of January, islander Trish Millines Dziko will present a free workshop, “Equitable Future,” from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

The workshop, for ages 14 to adult, will explore the following questions:

What would an equitable future look like for all youth on Vashon? When we say we want an equitable society, what does that really mean? What role do we play as individuals and a community to create it? How do we ensure all our children see their value and grow to continue the work of building an equitable society?

Dziko is the co-founder and executive director of the Seattle-based Technology Access Foundation (TAF), a nonprofit that creates access to transformative systems of learning for students and teachers of color to eliminate race-based disparities in our increasingly diverse society.

Workshop attendees are asked to come ready to engage and launch a collective action, focused on building an equitable future and helping Vashon schools deliver an educational experience our children deserve. The event will include savory appetizers provided by Chantal Jackson, of Thyme Well Spent.

Space is limited — preregister to reserve a spot in the workshop at vashoncenterforthearts.org.
