VCCC to sell vintage movie posters

Jack and Geri Peterson are offering their large collection of vintage original video release/movie posters as a way to generate some funds for Vashon Community Care Center (VCCC).

The Petersons came by the posters back in their entrepreneurial days when they tried their hand at retail.

“Before the big box video stores were even thought of, we opened two video rental/sale stores on Alaskan military bases. At that time few people owned video players so we also rented out the machines,” Geri said. In 1989, the couple noticed the move towards everyone owning their own equipment and decided to sell the business.

About 400 movie/video posters and promotional runners wound-up in their garage and were uncovered recently. Because the posters were stored for so long their condition varies. Some are a bit tired, and some are pristine.

At the time these posters were printed, most of the images were from the original movies and are therefore rare.

The subjects run the gamut from comedy to tragedy, from science fiction to real life, from love story to murder mystery.

Included are posters from Hitchcock, Disney, Star Wars, Elvis, Paul Newman and Judy Garland, to name a few. The Petersons decided these posters could be enjoyed rather than sitting gathering dust.

They hung more than 50 of the posters on VCCC’s walls carefully choosing a variety of images. “It has been great to see and hear so many people enjoy talking about those old films,” said Geri.

The Poster Blow-Out VCCC fundraiser will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 12. Most posters will be priced between $2 and $5. The event will be held in the dining room at VCCC.
