Silverwood Gallery will open a major exhibition of works by renowned Island painter Ted Kutscher at noon on Friday, Sept. 5. An artist’s reception will follow in the evening.

Gallery co-owner Margaret Heffelfinger said Kutscher’s new works — such as the piece shown above — underscore his growth as a painter.

“This single painting is a vivid example of how Kutscher’s mastery over the human form has grown over the last several years,” she said. “The girl in the bikini is simply exquisite.”

According to Kutscher, he’s drawn to “the interaction of light, color, form and structure.”

“I enjoy taking a vision from the eye to the canvas, emphasizing impressionist distinctions of hue more than value (although both are important),” he said in his artist’s statement. “Painting isn’t my everyday job, and when I paint, everyday life and everyday time go somewhere else.”

Kutscher received his bachelor of arts from Dartmouth College, his bachelor’s of law from the University of Denver and his master of science (taxation) from Golden Gate University.

Silverwood’s September show will also include copper repousse works by Ivonne Escobar de Kommer and pit-fired ceramics works by Hart Heffelfinger.
