Michael Whitmore returns to the Black Cat stage

His career highlights include an NEA Composers Grant, composing music for Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Franz Wright, and more.

Michael Whitmore, a nylon string guitarist, vocalist, and the leader/composer of the Vashon jazz ensemble Some’tet, will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, at a stage that is beloved to him —Snapdragon Cafe’s Black Cat Cabaret.

For seven years, Michael Whitmore and Some’tet played almost every Sunday evening at Snapdragon. Then came COVID, and a long forced hiatus from live performance.

Whitmore describes his music as tending most toward “the frayed edges of jazz — post-jazz, avant-jazz, free-jazz, with a hint of samba. He has some 2500 gigs under his belt, and in the past couple of years, has been working on “Timing is an Art is an Axe,” a new recording project that looks back at his five decades as a musician.

His career highlights include an NEA Composers Grant, composing music for Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Franz Wright, and performing on several dozen albums and soundtracks.

For the past seven years, Whitmore, with his partner Shelley Hanna, has been the host of Voice of Vashon’s Friday Morning Scramble radio show on the island’s local radio station, KVSH, at 101.9FM.
