On the first Friday in December at Hastings-Cone Gallery, Vashon artist Monica Gripman will introduce the island to a few of her friends. Some will be wearing alpaca, others sheep’s wool or even dog hair underneath finely sewn outfits Gripman designed.

Independent film producers Matthew and Sean Kohnen will screen their latest movie, “The Funeral Guest,” at a free showing at 1 p.m. Saturday at Vashon Theatre, courtesy of Raechel and Eileen Wolcott, who support indie filmmakers.
Watching “Speech & Debate,” this year’s opening play for the Vashon High School drama season, people may think they’re seeing a show about what The New York Times described as “a dark comedy (that seems to be) about a frumpy girl, a nerdy guy and an openly gay guy who band together to disclose the truth about a teacher who preys on his male students.”
The nonprofit group Friends of Mukai will bring Vancouver, B.C. filmmaker Pia Massie to the island to show and discuss her documentary “Just Beyond Hope” at 7 p.m. Saturday at Spoke. The film is free and the first of a series sponsored by Friends of Mukai.

Granny’s Attic is jumping into the gallery scene with an exhibit of artwork previously donated to the thrift shop. The show, Granny’s In The Gallery — which includes a large painting from Haitian artist Duncan Reseme’s marketplace series, an unusual Art Hanson lithograph, a signed and numbered Fay Jones serigraph plus watercolors, prints, oils and pastels — will be hung at the Hastings-Cone Gallery, courtesy of Adam Cone and Megan Hastings. All the pieces will be for sale.
