An alluring African beat is drawing four Vashon High School students across the world this summer on a 10-day drumming adventure.

Kajira Wyn Berry hoped that posting haiku on three signs, Burma-Shave style, at the bottom of the north-end ferry hill would slow down drivers. The drivers haven’t slowed down, but Berry’s beautiful calligraphy of haiku written by Island poets has become a landmark.
Maury Island is the birthplace of a rare and beautiful beast: the Langley silver tiger. It grows tall and gangly, loves the sun and is named for its frost-kissed appearance. The tiger is a hybridized tomato plant that produces juicy red- and orange-striped fruit which ripens early and enjoys a long season, the result of cross-pollination between two parent plants — what farmer Leda Langley calls a “happy accident.”

Vashon Allied Art’s World Music Festival, slated for 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Camp Burton outdoor amphitheater, will feature four groups, including African dance/drum group Sohoyini.
King County’s cultural services agency, 4Culture, approved 52 new group art projects — a total of nearly $200,000 in funding — including two Vashon art groups.

Lavender is in full bloom and ready for harvest in July on Vashon, and three Island lavender farms will open their fields this weekend for the sixth annual Lavender Farm Tour, a celebration of the plant, its beauty and its many uses.
Since they were 7 years old, the girls of Just Fiddlin’ ’Round have grown up while their music grew with them. Seeing “old music through young eyes,” the girls have ventured from strict instrumentals and rudimentary improvisation to complex vocal harmonies, fancy fiddling and country rock.
The Vashon Library was teeming with teens at 7 p.m. on the last Saturday in June. They polished their Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution skills while snacking on Red Vines, updated their Facebook accounts online and drank soda or enjoyed a lively battle of Magic cards.
