Quilters get wrapped up in Island art

Some of Vashon’s most prolific and beloved artists have been immortalized by quilters on the 24th annual Vashon Allied Arts Community Quilt, and a lucky winner will get to take the quilt home after a raffle held during Strawberry Festival.

One of the panels, in a nod to the long tradition of quilt auctions, depicts quilter Catholine Tribble holding a sign proclaiming “The End is Near” for raffle tickets sales.

It’s just one of 16 depictions of major players in Vashon’s art scene.

The quilt, dubbed “Art on the Rock,” also has panels honoring Art Hansen, Ray Pfortner, Hawk Jones, Harvey Bergman, Cassie Bergman, Jim Chobot, Julie Speidel, Pam Ingalls, Morgan Brig, JiJi Saunders, Hita von Mende, Margaret Tylczak, Julie King, George Wright, Mary Hosick, Liz Lewis, Irene Otis, Tami Anderson and Brian Fisher.

Two more artists, Karen Dale and Terry Donnelly, posed for the whimsical scene depicted on the back of the quilt.

The quilt was made by Island quilters who contributed almost 400 hours to create the finished work, organizers said.

The quilters, led by Tribble, include Angela Weiss, Nancy Sipple, Sharon Munger, Leann Doussett, Nan Caskey, Karen Nebe, Joanna Gugleilmino, Eileen Bergman, Mary Ellen Walker, Chris McGrath, Toni Eaton, Mary Belshaw, Carrie Sikorski and Jo Ann Bardeen.

Raffle tickets are on sale at Books by the Way, Heron’s Nest, Vashon Bookshop, Island Quilter and Blue Heron Art Center. On July 18 and 19, tickets will be sold at Strawberry Festival. Anyone who purchases 10 or more tickets will receive a free booklet filled with information about the quilt.

The drawing takes place at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 19. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit Vashon Allied Arts.
