The first weekend of this year’s Art Studio Tour, Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, will be augmented by special events showcasing two art forms particularly beloved on the Island — tilemaking and quilting.

Vashon’s first annual tile tour will feature five homes with installations created by members of Vashon Tile Guild. (See story on page A1.)

Tickets to the tour cost $20 and can be purchased at Blue Heron Art Center, Heron’s Nest, Books by the Way or by phone at 463-4833. A map to the five houses on the tour comes with the ticket.

Two bonus houses will serve as free teasers for the full tour. CW Pottery, belonging to Cory Winn, and Irene’s Tiles, belonging to Irene Otis, are included in the art studio tour, but on May 2 and 3 both Otis and Winn will open other parts of their homes to the public as well.

Meanwhile, in Bur-ton, quilt afficionados will have the chance to revel in a display of two years’ worth of work by Island quilters.

The Vashon Quilt Guild’s biennial quilt show will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, at Camp Burton’s Gresham Hall. The suggested donation for admission is $3.

The show will include more than 150 items; entries include quilts of all sizes — some quilted by machine and some by hand. Some items will be for sale.

Award-winning quilters Maggie Ball, from Bainbridge Island, and Wanda Rains, from Kingston, will judge the show entries on Friday, May 1. Winning quilts will sport prize ribbons during the show.

Visitors to the show on Saturday will be asked to vote for their favorite item, and the most popular entry will receive the “Viewer’s Choice” award. That ribbon will be displayed on Sunday.

Quilt appraiser Beverly Dunivent will be at the show both days appraising and evaluating quilts. There is a fee for her service; appointments can be made by contacting her at bevquilt@sprynet.com or (360) 357-8610.

Another feature of the show will be a store with many quilts, craft items, patterns and unfinished projects for sale. The Island Quilter store will also have a vendor booth at the quilt show.

The Vashon Allied Arts 2009 Community Quilt will be there for all to admire. Raffle tickets for the July 19 drawing will be on sale for $1 each.
