Rainbow Girls bring their soulful harmonies back to Vashon

Rainbow Girls, a folk trio from California with an ardent fan base on Vashon, will play a show, presented by islander Debra Heesch, at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 2 at Vashon Theatre, with special guest Alessandra Rose.

Rose has also played numerous shows on Vashon and is a part of Heesch’s “Sweet Dreams, Patsy Cline” tribute show.

Heesch said she is excited to welcome Rose and Rainbow Girls back to the island.

“This is a must-see concert and I’m thrilled that we scheduled it to be an early show time this time, at 5 p.m. sharp,” said Heesch.

Comprised of three musical talents — Vanessa May, Erin Chapin and Caitlin Gowdey — Rainbow Girls are known for shows that meld soulful harmonies, layered instrumentals and lyrical content with subject matter ranging from love, self-reflection and social justice. Their instruments and techniques include slide guitar, keys, upright bass, harmonica and beat-boxing and mouth trumpet.

Originally formed in 2010 in Santa Barbara, California, Rainbow Girls have performed internationally, from busking on the streets of Europe to playing pubs and theaters in the United Kingdom, to house concerts, festivals and shows in the United States.

They have also burnished their reputation on National Public Radio’s Tiny Desk concert series and KQED’s “The California Report,” and played alongside the likes of Hot Buttered Rum, The Brothers Comatose, ALO and John Craigie.

Along the way, they’ve found plenty of reasons to keep returning to Vashon.

The trio’s first show here was on the stage of Vashon’s farmer’s market. Since then, they’ve upped the ante with appearances at The Black Cat Cabaret, Open Space for Arts & Community, and Vashon Theatre.

“We come back every chance we get,” a member of the group told Heesch. “Where else do you get to play in a movie theater?”

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at VashonTheatre.com or at the box office. Doors to the show open at 4:30 p.m. All ages are welcome, and seating is general admission. A Syrian food cart will be` in front of the theatre starting at 4 p.m. for people to purchase food.
