Best-selling author and textile artist Kaffe Fassett is returning to the Island next week to teach workshops and lecture about his ground-breaking work and passionate theories about color and design.

Fassett, who is known worldwide for his knitting, needlepoint, tapestry, mosaics and quilting, will be joined by his protégé and partner Brandon Mably, who has achieved a wide following of his own for his bold, colorful knitwear and books about knitting. Mabley will present a solo workshop on knitting and also join Fassett to deliver two already sold-out workshops about quilting.

The pair’s visit to Vashon is sponsored by Island Quilter, Vashon’s destination quilt shop.

Shop owner Anja Moritz is excited that the London-based duo has made Vashon their only Northwest stop on a North American tour that includes appearances on the East Coast and the Midwest.

“We are thrilled that Kaffe and Brandon have chosen to come and see us again, for the third time in four years,” she said. “They said they love the Island and our store.”

Fassett is the author of several book; his latest, “Dreaming in Color,” is an autobiography that tells of his journey from his childhood in Big Sur, Calif., to a jet-setting life as an artist whose many honors include a one-person show at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and a commission from The Royal Shakespeare Company to co-design “As You Like It,” the opening show of their “Millennium” season.

“Strong color feeds into my design work,” Kaffe has written. “Over the years, pattern has become more and more of an obsession. ”

Kaffe’s lecture is 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Vashon Theater. Tickets, $17, can be purchased at Island Quilter or the door.
