Swing into summer with a big band dance party on Sunday

The party, organizers said, will include the chance to eat, drink, dance, schmooze and be merry, all the while celebrating Drama Dock’s 45-year history as it looks to the future.

Drama Dock, Vashon’s longest-running theater company, will hold a high-stepping fundraiser — a swing dance party slated for 7 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

The event will showcase the music of the Zimberg Mardis Big Band, a group of noted Northwest musicians known for their mastery of jazz and swing music. Guest vocalists will include Vashon’s own Maggie Laird, a stage actress, the music director for countless theatrical productions, and singer and pianist in several genres ranging from swing to rock.

Laird has also recorded several albums, winning high praise from critics.

According to Scott Yanow, author of The Jazz Singers, Laird’s music “can be thought of as jazz with a pop sensibility, displaying her roots in rock, pop, cabaret and the theatre while always having the spirit of jazz.”

The party, organizers said, will include the chance to eat, drink, dance, schmooze and be merry, all the while celebrating Drama Dock’s 45-year history as it looks to the future.

In August and September, the group will present “Wingehaven Park,” a new musical that takes place in the 1940s, on Vashon. In November, another musical offering, “Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story,” will feature 5th Avenue Theatre star, Billy Joe Huels, as Buddy Holly.
