Board historic vessel on Sunday

The Vashon Maury Island Heritage Association still has a few tickets available for a cruise around the Island on Sunday, Aug. 17, aboard the Virginia V. Boarding will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the north-end passenger ferry dock. It will cruise south around Point Robinson, into Quartermaster Harbor and north along Colvos Passage past Camp Sealth and other historic sites, returning to the dock around 5:30 p.m.

An on-board program featuring Island history, geology and ecology has been developed by the Heritage Association and Vashon College, drawing on its course, Vashon 101.

Tickets are $60 for Heritage Association members and $75 for non-members. To purchase them, contact Barbara Steen at

VashonSteen@aol.com or 463-9355. Wear soft-soled shoes, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the no-host bar on board.

Those wishing to see the historic vessel without taking the cruise can visit the north-end dock prior to the cruise departure; only ticketed passengers will be allowed on board.

Keep an eye out for the vessel on its route circumnavigating the Island on Sunday, where it will be visible from parks such as KVI Beach and Point Robinson early afternoon, Dockton Park mid-afternoon and Lisabeula and Fern Cove late afternoon. The Steamer Virginia V Foundation frequently offers public tours dockside at South Lake Union Park in Seattle, as well as public cruises and charters. For more information, visit www.virginiav.org.
