The art and craft of the local quilting scene will be on full view when the Vashon Island Quilt Guild exhibits up to 100 quilts in “Color Our World With Quilts,” a show held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29, in the cafeteria of the Sawbones building at 10221 SW 188th St.
The event will also feature quilting demonstrations and a raffle.
Island Quilter will offer a pop-up sale, outside the building, if weather is permitting, and Precision Sharpening will also be on hand (on Sunday only) to sharpen knives, shears, scissors and clipper blades.
There is a suggested donation of $5 to attend the show, with those 13 and younger admitted free.
This exhibition is the first public showing of the Vashon quilters’ work since 2018, with works ranging from traditional bed covers to creative wall hangings. The guild has about 50 members.
Many of the quilters have made work in response to creative challenges that are part of the group’s activities. For instance, during 2024, there was a “tube quilt” challenge and a “mystery fabric” challenge. The variety of quilts made in response to those challenges are proof that each quilt-maker’s approach is one-of-a-kind, no matter the rules or restrictions imposed.
Part of the guild’s mission is charity. Members create and donate many quilts to injured military veterans through the American Hero Quilts program. Quilts are also given to St. Joseph’s Birthing Center and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Examples of those quilts will also be included in the show. Several of the “mystery fabric” quilt entries will be donated to the Vashon DOVE Project, another local nonprofit.
The guild meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Vashon Lutheran Church, at 18623 Vashon Hwy SW. Monthly meetings usually include a speaker or activity as well. There are additional monthly meetings to help members improve sewing skills.
New members are always welcome, and don’t have to be quilters — an interest in the form is all that is needed. Find out more at viqg.org or visit the group’s Facebook page by searching Vashon Island Quilt Guild.
