What’s Happening April 18 – 25

A reggae god, a dance for a cause, a boogie at the bookstore, and more.

A duo keeps it jazzy

Max Hatt and Edda Glass, jazz artists, will perform a concert set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18. Described as “elegantly funky” by Wilco’s Nels Cline, the duo act combines Glass’s vocals and Hatt’s lyrical guitar. Their award-winning original compositions and interpretations of jazz, Brazilian Bossa Nova and Americana standards have taken them coast-to-coast, from New York City’s Lincoln Center to NPR’s Mountain Stage, Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center and the Sundance Film Fest. In their first visit to Vashon, the duo will be joined by Seattle bass virtuoso Clipper Anderson and drummer Mark Ivester. Advance tickets (sold until two hours before showtime at vashoncenterforthearts.org) are $15 to $32; all tickets at the door cost $36.

Reggae god returns

Jamaica-born songwriter, singer and instrumentalist Clinton Fearon will be joined by another reggae player, Kevin Kinsella, for an intimate acoustic performance at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Camp Colvos Brewing. The show, said Pete Welch, of Vashon Events, is sold out.

Dance for a cause

DANCE Flash! will raise funds for Vashon’s Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness at an alcohol-free, kid-friendly shoe-less dance at 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Spoke Vashon, located at 9923 SW 178th St. Donations of $5 to $12 per person (or more) would be greatly appreciated, organizers said.

Boogie to the bookstore

Vashon Bookshop will celebrate Independent Bookstore Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 27. Discounts, performances and cake will be offered to those who stop by the bookstore to celebrate.

Sway to St. Ophelia and General Mojo’s

Two bands, St. Ophelia and General Mojo’s, will appear in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Open Space for Arts & Community. St. Ophelia, fronted by islanders Joseph Panzetta and Rebekah Kuzma, plays soulful songs in a wide range of genres. General Mojo’s is known for psychedelic pop, with band members including Dune Butler, Heather Thomas, David Solonen, Sam Veatch and Eric Vanderbilt-Matthews. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and $25 for a table seat. Buy them at openspacevashon.org.

Chorale celebrates 30 years of song

The Vashon Island Chorale will celebrate its 30th anniversary in two upcoming concerts, on April 27 and 28, in the Kay White Hall of Vashon Center for the Arts. The program, accompanied by pianist Linda Lee and a 24-piece orchestra, will include classics by Bernstein, Copland and Fauré, and also Vaughan Williams’s “Serenade to Music” and Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances.” Works by local composers Eric Lane Barnes and Buzz Brusletten, plus a quartet of local soloists, will add to the occasion. The Vashon Youth Chorus, under the direction of Julie Kangas, will perform with the Chorale, and Gary D. Cannon, the Chorale’s artistic director, will give pre-concert lectures for both performances. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, with a lecture at 7 p.m.; and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28, with a pre-concert lecture at 2:30 p.m. Tickets ($20/general, $18/VCA member, $15/senior, $5/youth to age 16) are available at the VCA lobby desk and online at vashoncenterforthearts.org.
