Aerial festival returns to Open Space

The 10th Open Air Aerial Festival, featuring internationally touring artists, local aerialists, and aerial students from Vashon’s UMO School of Physical Arts, will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 7, in the Great Lawn of Open Space for Arts & Community.

“We host countless events throughout the year, but there is something special about Open Air,” said producer Janet McAlpin. “It’s Open Space’s gift to the community. Admission is by donation, and our main goal is to bring our island community together to celebrate the unbreakable bond between arts and community. After skipping last year’s Open Air festival, it’s a joy to have the opportunity to bring Vashon together with this event.”

Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket and the whole family, but leave their pets at home. RSVP and find out more about the event at openspacevashon.com.

See it on the big screen

Vashon Theatre’s upcoming shows include “Summer of Soul,” beginning July 30 and playing through Aug. 5. At the Night Light Drive-in, located at Open Space for Arts & Community, a throw-back lineup will include “Goonies” at 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 29 and Saturday, July 31, and “American Graffiti” at 9 p.m. Friday, July 30 and Sunday, Aug. 1. The sci-fi classic and a true movie for our times, “Blade Runner,” will play at 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 7. “Rebel Without a Cause,” starring James Dean, plays at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5 and Sunday, August 8.

Tickets and concessions to all presentations must be purchased in advance at vashontheatre.com.

Concerts in the Park are back

Concerts in the Park, a long-running and popular free outdoor series, will return after a one-year hiatus, due to the pandemic, on 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, August 5 to 26, at Ober Park. There’s plenty of grass and natural berms to spread out those picnic blankets and enjoy music on a warm summer night. Families can come to relax, let the kids play on the playground and enjoy the entertainment. Leave your dogs, alcohol and smoking materials at home, though.

The Concerts in the Park series is presented by the Vashon Park District and curated by Vashon Events. This year’s lineup includes The Confessions (R&B and Sou) on Aug. 5; St. Ophelia (Alt-Folk Rock) on Aug. 12; Poultry in Motion (Folk and Country) on Aug. 19, and One More Mile (Blues) on Aug. 26.

Calling musical theater talent

Auditions for Drama’s Dock upcoming production of a new musical, “Winghaven Park,” will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Vashon Community Church Hall, at 9318 SW Cemetery Road. The musical is based on Vashon’s turbulent World War II-era history. As a musical in development, casting and production opportunities will focus on a workshop in the fall of 2021, followed by a public reading and fully staged production in 2022.

Those auditioning should prepare one song and bring sheet music; play scripts and piano accompaniment will be provided. Auditions can also be submitted by video or Zoom. Interested actors, singers and production crew members are requested to email a resume to Lisa Peretti, at pen.forge@gmail.com. For more information about the show, visit winghaven.info or dramadock.org.
