World-class slack-key guitarist brings Hawaii to Vashon

If you’ve ever heard world-class slack-key guitarist Makana play a show, then you’ll know the magic one man can create with one guitar. Not only does his single acoustic guitar sound like three, but the traditional Hawaiian slack-key style infused with elements of bluegrass, blues and rock is the fastest and cheapest route to an evening in the lush islands of Hawaii.

This will be Makana’s fifth performance on Vashon but his first in the Vashon Theatre. In a recent phone interview, he said he is excited to return to this island.

“Vashon is a special place,” he said. “I love the people and have good friends there.”

Makana, who has shared the stage with Sting, Santana, John Legend, Elvis Costello, Jack Johnson, Chris Isaak, Bad Company and The Fray, will “bring a new voice with him” — that of Estrella (Barnett). He plans to perform new songs along with the more traditional, transcendental Hawaiian music.

“I think people like to come to my shows because I have a deep respect for those who came before me — my Hawaiian elders and the troubadours of the 1960s,” he said.

Another signature element of seeing Makana perform is the well-worn face of his guitar. This show, he’ll play on a guitar that has a special story. Called “Morning Star,” it was given to him at age 13 by his mentor, the late Uncle Sonny Chillingworth, but was stolen out of his house over a decade ago. Earlier this year, Makana received an email from a stranger who wrote that he had his guitar. He’d bought it on Craigslist, but once he saw the well-worn marks, he recognized it was Makana’s.

“He Googled it, saw the marks and knew it was mine,” Makana recalled. “I flew back to Hawaii in the middle of my tour to get it. I feel blessed.”

Makana will play at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at the Vashon Theatre. Tickets are $20 in advance; $25 on the day of show; and are sold at the box office or vashontheatre.com.
