Youth dancers and musicians perform original works

Four years ago, VCA Center for Dance Artistic Director Christine Juarez decided to produce a stand-alone show of unique works by young island performing artists.

Called “Original Works,” the production has gained notoriety for being a dynamic and vibrant showcase for Vashon’s youth dancers and musicians. This year, “Original Works” will open Friday and run through the weekend at the Kay White Hall.

VCA ballet and modern instructor Vanessa Wylie is the artistic director for the new show, with tap instructor Crissy Baker assisting. Following the format of “Original Works,” Wylie invited youth performing artists to audition with their own creative concepts. Now, dancers from VCA Center for Dance and Vashon Dance Academy along, with guest musicians — all ages 18 and under — will light up the stage with music plus contemporary, modern, tap, ballet and hip- hop dances.

“This performance is for the kids to play with their creativity, to learn to create on their own and find their own artist within themselves,” Wiley said.

All the choreography will be created by students or dance instructors.

“There will be some fun, new and different styles introduced,” Baker said. “We are excited to see what we can do to create a unique, beautiful show with all variety of dance in the new building, with greater possibilities for lighting and staging.”
